Undercard: Preliminary Fights Before the Main Event

The undercard is the collection of fights that precede the main event on a fight card. These preliminary bouts serve multiple purposes: they fill the event's runtime, showcase developing talent, provide opportunities for less established fighters, and build momentum for the headlining bout. In both sanctioned and underground fighting, the undercard is where most fighters begin their careers.

Structure and Purpose

In sanctioned combat sports, undercard fights are typically shorter than main event bouts -- fewer rounds, shorter round durations, or both. The fighters on the undercard earn smaller purses and receive less promotional attention. For the promotion, undercard bouts are a proving ground. Fighters who deliver exciting performances on the undercard earn opportunities to move up the card at future events.

The undercard also serves a practical function for live events. It fills time while the venue fills up. Early arriving spectators watch undercard fights while casual fans are still finding their seats, buying drinks, and settling in. By the time the main card begins, the venue is full and the crowd is warmed up.

Undercards in Underground Fighting

Underground organizations handle undercards differently. Rough N Rowdy leans heavily into its undercard, often featuring amateur fighters with zero experience. The spectacle of untrained people throwing wild punches is part of the brand's appeal. The line between undercard entertainment and competitive matchmaking is intentionally blurred.

At BKFC events, the undercard follows a more conventional model -- developing bare knuckle fighters working their way up the promotional ladder. Top Dog FC and Strelka tend to present fights without explicit undercard/main event distinctions, releasing them as individual videos rather than as a sequenced card.

Streetbeefs does not use the undercard concept at all. Every beef fight carries equal weight -- there is no hierarchy of importance among disputes.

The Undercard Fighter

Fighting on the undercard is a rite of passage. Nearly every champion in combat sports started on undercards, learning to perform under pressure, deal with pre-fight nerves, and adapt to the environment of a live event. In underground fighting, undercard slots offer a relatively low-stakes entry point for first-time competitors.
