Orthodox: A Right-Handed Fighting Stance

The orthodox stance is the standard fighting position for right-handed fighters. The left foot and left hand are forward, the right foot and right hand are back. The right hand is the power hand, delivering the cross (straight right) and the overhand right as the primary knockout weapons. The left hand serves as the jab -- the most frequently thrown punch in combat sports, used to measure distance, set up combinations, and control the pace of a fight.

Mechanics

The orthodox stance is designed to maximize the power of the dominant right hand. By positioning the right hand furthest from the opponent, it has the longest distance to travel before impact. During that travel, the fighter rotates the hips and torso, transferring the full kinetic chain of the body into the punch. This is why the rear hand cross is the highest-percentage knockout punch in combat sports.

The lead (left) hand, positioned closer to the opponent, sacrifices power for speed and utility. The jab is the fastest punch available, used both offensively and defensively. A sharp jab keeps opponents at distance, disrupts their rhythm, and sets up the right hand.

The Default Position

Roughly 85-90% of fighters adopt the orthodox stance, making it the default in combat sports. Training systems, coaching methodologies, and defensive techniques are all built primarily around the orthodox-vs-orthodox dynamic. When two orthodox fighters face each other, the geometry is symmetrical -- both fighters have the same angles, the same openings, and the same vulnerabilities.

This symmetry breaks when an orthodox fighter faces a southpaw. The mirrored stance creates unfamiliar angles that many orthodox fighters struggle to navigate, particularly at the amateur and underground level.

Orthodox in Underground Fighting

In underground fighting, the orthodox stance is overwhelmingly dominant, reflecting the general population's right-hand dominance. At events like Streetbeefs, Rough N Rowdy, and KOTS, the vast majority of fighters stand orthodox.

The quality of the orthodox stance varies enormously across the underground scene. A trained boxer's orthodox stance -- hands high, chin tucked, weight balanced, feet at shoulder width -- looks fundamentally different from an untrained fighter's approximation. The stance is the first indicator of a fighter's training level, and experienced viewers can assess competitive balance within seconds of seeing both fighters assume their positions.
