Bucket Brigade: Informal Corner Support at Underground Events
The bucket brigade is slang for the informal, untrained support crew that accompanies a fighter to an underground or backyard event. Unlike a professional corner team -- which includes a licensed trainer, a cutman, and an assistant with years of experience -- the bucket brigade typically consists of friends, family members, or training partners carrying a water bottle, a towel, and good intentions.
What the Bucket Brigade Does
The term is affectionate but honest about the limitations. A bucket brigade provides:
Hydration. Water or sports drinks between rounds. This is the "bucket" in the name -- someone holding a water container and offering it between rounds.
Towels. For wiping sweat and blood from the fighter's face.
Encouragement. Vocal support from people who know the fighter personally. "Keep your hands up" and "he's tired" are the most common pieces of advice, regardless of whether they are accurate.
Basic first aid. Ice in a plastic bag, a wet towel for swelling, maybe some petroleum jelly found at a convenience store. This is a far cry from the enswell, coagulant solution, and professional tools a licensed cutman carries.
Post-fight care. Driving the fighter home, icing injuries, and keeping an eye on them for concerning symptoms.
What the Bucket Brigade Cannot Do
The gap between a bucket brigade and a professional corner is significant:
- A bucket brigade cannot provide tactical adjustments based on technical fight analysis
- They typically cannot treat cuts effectively enough to keep a badly cut fighter in a bout
- They may not recognize the signs that a fighter should not continue (concussion symptoms, broken bones, internal injuries)
- They may lack the authority or willingness to stop a fight on their fighter's behalf -- the corner stoppage that could prevent serious injury
This last point is perhaps the most important. A professional corner team will throw in the towel when their fighter is taking excessive damage. A bucket brigade -- composed of friends who do not want to embarrass the fighter or who share the fighter's desire to continue -- may allow a bout to go on longer than it should.
The Reality of Underground Fighting
The bucket brigade is not a failure of the underground fighting system. It is a reflection of reality. Most underground fighters do not have access to professional trainers, licensed cutmen, or experienced cornermen. They have friends who are willing to show up and help. The bucket brigade is what happens when fighting is accessible to everyone, not just those who can afford professional support.
Some underground organizations are working to improve corner quality. Top Dog FC and BKFC have moved toward requiring trained corner personnel. But for the majority of underground events, the bucket brigade remains the standard.
