What Is BKFC ICE WARS? (Bare Knuckle on Ice)

Short answer: Ice Wars is a separate combat sports promotion in which fighters wear hockey skates and jerseys and punch each other bare-fisted inside a 900-square-foot enclosed rink called the Ice Box. They genuinely fight on ice, not in a ring placed inside an arena. It was founded as Ice Wars International by Charlie Nama, was co-branded as BKFC ICE WARS after BKFC took a stake in 2025, and now runs independently under president Ian Heinisch.

The Full Answer

The single most common misunderstanding about Ice Wars is that it is bare knuckle boxing staged in a hockey arena. It is not. Competitors compete on the ice surface itself, in skates, wearing hockey jerseys and traditional hockey equipment, with no gloves and no hand wraps. The fighting area is a purpose-built 900-square-foot boarded enclosure. Clinching and wrestling are prohibited, so the bouts are pure exchanges of punches on a surface that gives neither fighter a base to plant on.

The format arrived at that point in stages. The first event under the BKFC banner, in Michigan in June 2025, used synthetic ice and four-ounce MMA gloves. Real ice and bare knuckles came in with the October 2025 card at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida, billed by the venue as the first legally sanctioned bare-fisted fight on real ice anywhere.

The second common error is the ownership. Ice Wars was not invented by BKFC as a sub-brand. Ice Wars International existed first as a Canadian company, with roots in a 2006 hockey-enforcers event in Prince George, British Columbia. BKFC acquired a stake in 2025 and the events carried joint branding for a period. The promotion now presents itself simply as Bare Knuckle Ice Wars, with former UFC middleweight Ian Heinisch as president; Heinisch has said the two companies' principals still work together. BKFC's 2025 launch material projected as many as 24 Ice Wars events in 2026, but the publicly documented count since the relaunch is four cards, the most recent on 14 May 2026.

Ice Wars made its US national television debut on 8 August 2026 in the ESPN8: The Ocho block, a pre-taped half-hour of four fights pulled from that May card. Its next live event is 5 September 2026 at River Cree Resort & Casino in Enoch, Alberta.
