Slip: Head Movement to Avoid an Incoming Punch
A slip is a defensive technique where a fighter moves their head laterally off the center line to avoid an incoming punch, allowing the strike to pass harmlessly over the shoulder. Slipping requires minimal movement, relying on a slight bend at the waist and rotation of the torso rather than stepping away. A well-executed slip puts the defender in perfect position to throw a counter punch while the attacker is extended and off-balance.
Origins and Usage
Slipping has been a core boxing defense since the sport's technical evolution in the late nineteenth century. The great defensive boxers throughout history, from Jack Johnson to Floyd Mayweather Jr., built their styles around the slip, using it to make opponents miss by inches while positioning themselves for devastating counters.
The slip is drilled using the slip bag or maize bag, where fighters practice moving their head side to side in rhythm. The technique requires excellent reflexes, timing, and the ability to read punches early. Against straight punches like the jab and cross, the slip is the most energy-efficient defense available.
In Underground Fighting
In bare knuckle underground fighting, slipping is arguably the most important defensive skill. Without gloves to absorb or deflect punches through blocking, avoiding contact entirely through head movement becomes paramount. Fighters who can slip effectively in underground bouts take far less damage and preserve their ability to fight deep into a contest.
The uncontrolled environments of underground venues, including poor lighting and distracting crowds, make slipping more difficult but more valuable. Fighters with polished slipping technique stand out in underground circuits, earning reputations as difficult to hit and dangerous to engage.
