Parry: Deflecting an Incoming Punch with the Hand

A parry is a defensive technique where a fighter uses their hand to redirect an incoming punch away from its intended target. Rather than absorbing the blow or moving the head to avoid it, the parry deflects the punch to the side, disrupting the attacker's balance and creating an opening for a counter strike. It is one of the most efficient defensive tools in boxing and bare knuckle fighting.

Origins and Usage

The parry has been a fundamental defensive technique in boxing since the sport's earliest technical manuals. It is closely associated with the classical boxing tradition, where economy of movement and precise defense were valued over evasion through footwork alone. The parry requires timing, hand-eye coordination, and the ability to read incoming punches quickly.

The most common parry redirects the jab by catching it with the rear hand and pushing it across the body. This simultaneously removes the threat and opens a clear path for a counter cross. Skilled defensive fighters use parries in combination with slips and rolls to create a layered defense that is extremely difficult to penetrate.

In Underground Fighting

In bare knuckle underground fighting, the parry is particularly valuable because it minimizes contact with incoming punches. Unlike blocking, which still transfers significant force through the guard, a well-executed parry redirects the punch entirely, reducing damage to the defender.

Underground fighters with boxing backgrounds often display superior parrying skills, using them to frustrate less technical opponents who cannot understand why their punches keep missing. The parry is a hallmark of the counter-punching style that thrives in bare knuckle competition.
