Lethwei: Myanmar's Ancient Bare-Knuckle Combat Sport

Lethwei, also known as Burmese bare-knuckle boxing, is a traditional combat sport from Myanmar that permits the use of all nine striking limbs: fists, elbows, knees, kicks, and headbutts. Often called "the art of nine limbs," Lethwei is considered one of the most brutal striking arts in the world due to its allowance of headbutts and its bare-fisted format.

Origins and Usage

Lethwei's history stretches back over a thousand years in Myanmar (Burma), where it evolved as both a military combat technique and a cultural tradition. Fights were historically held during religious festivals, royal celebrations, and village gatherings. Fighters wrap their hands in gauze or thin cotton strips but wear no padded gloves, and the inclusion of headbutts -- illegal in virtually every other striking sport -- gives Lethwei a unique and fearsome character.

Traditional Lethwei rules are distinctive: the only way to win is by knockout. If both fighters survive all rounds, the bout is declared a draw regardless of who appeared to dominate. There are no judges' scorecards. This rule creates an aggressive, finish-oriented fighting style where both competitors are incentivized to pursue the stoppage rather than coast to a decision.

In Underground Fighting

Lethwei has gained international attention through fighters like Dave Leduc, a Canadian who became the sport's most visible global ambassador. While Lethwei remains most popular in Myanmar, international events and social media exposure have introduced the sport to a worldwide audience fascinated by its raw intensity. The bare-knuckle, headbutt-legal format positions Lethwei as perhaps the most extreme form of sanctioned striking combat, occupying a space between regulated sport and the anything-goes ethos of underground fighting.
