Half Guard: Partial Guard Position with One Leg Entangled

Half guard is a ground grappling position where the bottom fighter has one of the top fighter's legs trapped between their own legs, while the other leg is free. It is a transitional position between full guard and mount, offering the bottom fighter some control while remaining at a positional disadvantage. Skilled half guard players have developed entire offensive systems from this position, including sweeps, back takes, and submission entries.

Origins and Usage

Half guard was long considered a defensive position of last resort, used only when a fighter was losing the battle to maintain full guard. Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioners, particularly Roberto "Gordo" Correa, transformed it into an offensive position in the 1990s. Modern grapplers now deliberately pull half guard to access underhooks, sweeps, and leg lock entries.

The position offers a unique combination of control and mobility. The bottom fighter can use the trapped leg to off-balance the top fighter while using their upper body to frame, underhook, and create angles for escapes or attacks.

In Underground Fighting

In underground fighting on hard surfaces, half guard serves as a critical survival position. A fighter who has been taken down and cannot recover full guard can use half guard to prevent the opponent from achieving mount, where ground and pound becomes devastating on concrete.

From half guard, underground fighters prioritize sweeps and returns to standing rather than extended guard play. The discomfort of the hard surface motivates fighters to use half guard as a transitional position rather than a place to settle and work slowly. Quick, explosive escapes from half guard can shift momentum and get the fight back to the feet.
